DVR Networking Guide

Checklist before you begin:

  • Make sure you have a computer close by that is connected to the same router as your DVR.
  • Make sure the DVR is connected to your router through an ethernet cable.  If the DVR is connected properly the LED will light up on the back of the DVR indicating data is being transmitted.
  • You will need the username and password for your router if you plan to view the DVR from an external network.  All routers are different, if you have not changed the password then it should be default.  You can find the default username and password for your router by doing a Google search for ” [Router Model #] ” default password.


How to network your S Series DVR and enable remote viewing from an external network.

1) Go to the computer nearby which is connected to the same router.  Click the start button, and click Run.  For Windows Vista/7 the search box acts as Run.

2) Type CMD in the run/search box and press enter.  You will get a black command prompt box.  Type ” ipconfig ” into this box and press enter.  You will now get a list of information you will need for configuring the DVR.

3) Take note of the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway.  We will use these in configuring the DVR.

4) Go back to the DVR and press the menu button.  Select the main menu from the initial screen and press select (enter).

5) Scroll to the bottom left icon ” Network Setup ” and press select (enter).

6) Once in the network setup menu you will notice three options at the top.  ADSL, DHCP, and LAN.  The ADSL option will never be used under any circumstance.  DHCP will automatically assign an IP address to the DVR but is unreliable when viewing the DVR outside the network because the IP can change.

7) Select the LAN option for optimum stability.  Using the arrow keys scroll down to the first block next to IP address.  Press the Select (enter) key to change the values.  We are going to match this IP address to the IP address you took from your computer EXCEPT for the last block of digits which will be a different number we choose that will be unique to this DVR.

8) Default IP address’ vary from router to router with most defaulting to so we will use this for our example.  Under IP address, change the value in the first three blocks so that they match the IP from your computer.  When you get to the last box type in a unique number, it is recommended to use 90 because this is rarely in use.

** Note: To get the IP address values to stay after changing the value you must scroll over to the Enter Arrow and press select (enter)

9) Your IP address should look like this:

10) Scroll down to subnet mask and repeat the above steps except make this value match exactly the subnet mask you took from your computer.

11) Next scroll to the gateway and make this value match exactly what you took from your computer as well.

12) Scroll to the DNS, enter all 0’s for your DNS. You should have here.

13) Lastly, scroll to your first button HTTP Setup.

14) The only thing you need to change here is to first make sure Enable HTTP Server is “Checked” then change your Port to 5400 or whatever port you prefer, we recommend 5400.  Port 80 does not work well.  Once you have changed your port, leave everything else default and click OK, then OK again out of Network Setup.

Your DVR is now configured for Internal network access.  Now the hard part, we need to open the DVR Port you selected in your router to allow access from outside the network (home/laptop, etc).

How to use port forwarding to open your DVR’s port in your router:

1) Open Internet Explorer and type in your Default Gateway which you’ve recorded from Step 3 and input into the DVR on Step 8.  Don’t forget don’t forget the http:// your address bar should look like this:  then hit enter.

2) You should be prompted for a username and password.  Enter the username and password for your router which you obtained before you began using the setup checklist.  If you have not changed the password here it should be the default password for your router which you can find by doing a google search for ” [Your Router Model #] ” default password.

3) Once you entered your password and clicked OK you should be at your routers Administration home page.  EVERY Router is different, some routers require advanced configuration directly by your ISP in which case you will need to call your internet service provider (Particularly AT&T and Verizon) to get this to function correctly.

4) What we are trying to do in the router is to open the port we assigned your DVR on your router so the video feed can pass through your router’s firewall.  If you’re using the same information from our example, you’re going to use port 5400 and the IP address

EVERY Router is different, it is imperative that you use the online guide at to configure the port for your routers model number by clicking here (select your router from the list, then click “Skip Advertisement” at the top of this page.  Once on the main router page in the first paragraph click “Default Guide”  This will allow you to open your start/end port 5400 & 5400 to your DVR IP:

Once you have opened the port in your router and applied/saved the configuration, you will access your DVR remotely by typing in the PUBLIC IP address : Port.

To find your public IP and check whether or not your port is open correctly go to  Type in the port you opened in the DVR  and click on check.  If you have completed all these steps successfully you will get a green “Success” indicator under the section where you input your port.  If there’s a problem you will get a red “Error – listing your reason”.  If the reason is “timed out” that means the information inside your DVR does not match the information you opened in your router.  If the reason is “connection refused” you are using a port or IP that your ISP is blocking and you must contact them for more information.

This is going to be the IP you use to connect to your DVR from an external network.  Now click on the address bar and type your public IP:port and click enter.  For example our’s would look like this :

Enter your username and password and install the Active X Controllers which you should get a pop-up for, watch for the notification bar and select always allow or always run from this site.  Now you should see a Menu containing several options, select Internet Explorer and you should now be viewing your Cameras!

I am going insane trying to view my Ivigil DVR on my Iphone. I can see it from computers away from my house through IE so I am sure I have my IP address correct and my port is open.

Please help – I have an TRH08 DVR software version 2.88D34_Y and hardware version 1.3

When you go to type in the port number, If it says Success everything is set up properly, If it says error- then you need to re-check your settings in the router.
